1. WRITE VISUALLY

See each shot in your mind's eye and write it down in a clear and concise fashion.

2. THREE-ACT STRUCTURE

"In Act 1 you get your fella up a tree.

In Act 2 you throw rocks at him.

In Act 3 you get your fella out of the tree."

—George M. Cohen

3. MANAGERS

A good manager will only want to become attached to your script if they hold the rights to the underlying IP or if they were instrumental in the development of an original idea. If not, they're most likely a producer who hung up a manager shingle so they could acquire their scripts for free. I advise you to avoid these managers like the plague. They'll likely do you more harm than good.

4. MEETINGS

First, establish rapport as quickly as possible. Then, ask what they're looking for or hoping to find. Be prepared with scripts or ideas that might meet these needs.

5.  PRODUCE YOUR OWN WORK

The best way to move your screenwriting career forward is to make something. It could be a short film, a YouTube channel, or a local play. It doesn't matter what. Just don't wait for someone else to give you permission to create.

6.  SCENE WORK 1

If you're stuck on a particular scene, try writing a big block of text about the scene. Include everything you can think of. Pay no mind to screenplay format at this point. Just pour it all out. Now go through it and select the parts you like best, and you should be well on your way to having a workable scene. In my opinion, this technique is especially useful when working on an action scene.

7.  SCENE WORK 2

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty—that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." John Keats.

Strive to write the truth in each scene. Ask yourself what your character would say in response to a particular remark or do in a certain situation. This adherence to what you deem to be true can elevate your work as much as anything else you do with wit, imagination, and style.
